The first highlight revolved around the first “echo” of the word “International”, the struggle of workers for better working conditions. This theme was approached by evoking the “work” of natural entities to produce life, but also, as working entities for human needs that exhaust them. For this second major event, Le Lieu Unique welcomes personalities and ecosystems from the four corners of the globe on November 16 from 11am to 7pm, to evoke the other dimension of the “international”: a geographical international where, on several continents, natural entities escape the status of things and become “people”.
Come andhear the stories of the Whanganui River in New Zealand, Lake Erie in the USA, the Atrato River in Colombia, the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain… all beings of nature who have become “legal persons” in recent years… Theproject led by writer, researcher and artist Camille de Toledo will be the echo chamber of these metamorphoses. Stories of hope that herald a transformation of our societies, and invite us to listen to the interests, values and needs of all earthly entities…
Morning from 11am: the Assembly of Nature’s Voices…
… Voices from around the world, live, across time zones and languages, from New Zealand to Latin America… tell the stories of the Whanganui River, Lake Erie, the Atrato River… and more broadly tell the story of this cultural and legal turning point.
With Tisch O’Dell and Kai Huschke from the USA, Rory Smith from New Zealand, Elizabeth Gallon Droste, Estefanía Pavón from Latin America… and the many voices in Europe fighting to defend their ecosystems.
Afternoon from 4pm: The case of the “Mar Menor”, the story of a lagoon…
The Mar Menor, a lagoon in southern Spain threatened by numerous industries, is the first ecosystem in Europe to be granted “non-human person” status by a 2021 law. How did this happen? What is the history of this lagoon and the law that made it a “subject of law”? How can we draw inspiration from it?
With Eduardo Salazar, lawyer, professor of public law, and human voice of the Mar Menor.
6:30 pm: Fiction about a forthcoming law
Following her practice of “transformative meditations”, Camille de Toledo will propose a narrative – snippets of thoughts, reflections, stories – to give shape to this world to come and propose a path towards an international of rivers and other elements of nature…
