For the emergence of a cultural ecology. The first event takes place on October 5 at the Goethe Institut in Nancy, France.“A host of thoughts are born and develop through the general culture of the mind, just as branches blossom in spring“, said Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Blühen, German for flowering, is the name of the new cultural ecology event created by the Goethe Institut in Nancy in tribute to the famous poet and botanist, who was as interested in the beauty of words as he was in the mystery of flowers.
With the collaboration of COAL, an association dedicated to art and ecology, the Goethe Institut invites you to its garden, inherited from the Nancy school and its botanical gardens, alongside artists, philosophers and cultural players, to bring to life imaginations, desires, inspirations and the thousand and one ways of rethinking our relationship with living things.
This first day of artistic and cultural experiences, encounters, performances and gardening will be devoted to the need to take care: care of the Earth, care of ourselves and of others, whether human or not. On the program: Performance and workshops with Clément Richem, Claire Hannicq and the Nancy botanical garden Debate “The art of care” with philosopher Jean-Philippe Pierron, curator Beatrice Josse, artists Clément Richem and Claire Hannicq and Rémi Saxe from the botanical garden. Animated by Loic Fel (COAL). Storytelling tasting by Géraldine Longueville Followed by a reception hosted by chef Débora Incorvaia

To celebrate the closing of VIVANT, a Cultural Season for Biodiversity and the 2020-2021 edition of CHRONICLES, Biennial of Digital Imaginations on the theme of Eternity, COAL joins CHRONICLES for a day of meetings in the heart of the living.

MARSEILLE – ONLINE

If the theme of eternity was that of religion and then that of the modern dream, it has now become inseparable from ecology. At the time of the sixth mass extinction, the question arises as to the sustainability of our existence and of life on Earth, whose great cycles once seemed eternal.

These questions of interrupted cycles, losses and collapses of the living are found in the artists’ works. At the heart of artistic fiction abound new worlds, new relationships between men and machines, new temporalities to question eternity in the face of the obsolescence of technologies and, from now on, in the face of the obsolescence of the living itself.

At the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, the questions of the living and the perishable are more than ever linked. In collaboration with COAL, the magazine Billebaude and the European project T-FACTOR, the Biennial closes by giving voice to artists who rethink the link to life and the inter-species dialogue, the question of the collapse of life but also of its resilience, so that the question of eternity becomes that of the sustainable, of the viable and of the liveable.

MORNING

10am-12pm ROUND TABLE
  – The arts, the living and the city. Extension of the field of possibility.

With Caterina Taurelli – Curator at Manifattura Tabacchi, Florence; Colette Tron – La Friche la Belle de Mai – Director of Alphabetville, Marseille ; Lucas Evers, Head of Programme, Waag, Amsterdam ; Mick Finch, Professor of Visual Art Practice, University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins.
Moderation: Karim Asry and Eva Riccio (T-factor project)

The research and actions of the European T-Factor project aim to understand and encourage the positive impact on our cities of emerging cultures that are born precisely in the ruins of post-industrial societies, to imagine better futures and to neutralize the dystopian tendencies that seem inevitable. It attempts to highlight initiatives that imagine new common futures by placing the artistic act and culture at the heart of the transformation of cities.

The conversation we propose involves four partner cities of the T-factor project: Marseille, Amsterdam, Florence and London. It will bring together the commonalities between these experiences of urban regeneration. Spaces can change their narratives through artistic research and we will ask whether this leads to a diversity of representations.

AFTERNOON

Moderation: Joan Pronnier (COAL)

If it has become “easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”, how can we imagine the world to come? And how to give substance to these imaginary worlds? Artists work to make palpable what we do not see, to work the substance of the virtual and to transform concepts into worlds. Between science and fiction, between reality and virtual: meeting with the ultra-sensitive and the infra-thin.

Moderation: Anne de Malleray (Revue Billebaude)

We inherit a philosophy that affirms the exceptionality of humans in relation to the rest of nature. Faced with the ecological crisis, how can we think, imagine and feel beyond this rupture? How can we reweave theories, practices and imaginaries that make room for other living beings? This discussion is placed at the crossroads of philosophy, science and art, a privileged place to open spaces of theoretical and sensitive experimentation from this issue.

What future for the human species? Far from the catastrophic scenarios portrayed by the media, Rocio Berenguer imagines a utopia, an inter-species meeting where the different kingdoms of life – human, animal, vegetable, mineral, machine – are invited to negotiate together the possibilities of their coexistence.

Coexistence is a poetic text written by Rocio Berenguer which is on the border of the concert, the theatrical text and the performance. A dialogue between a human and an artificial intelligence (AI) that evokes the possibilities of coexistence between the different kingdoms (animal, vegetable, mineral, human and machine)

Tuesday, December 1st, 2020 from 10am to 12pm, Loic Fel, co-founder of COAL will participate in the online workshop “Circuits courts / Le local dans les pratiques de création musicale”. This online workshop cycle “Changing our practices” is organized by Futurs composés, a national network of musical creation, which gathers nearly 300 members on the whole national territory. The network defends the place of creation in the evolution of artistic movements and its relationship to the public.

For this workshop “Short circuits / The local in the practices of musical creation”, are approached the questions of the models of short circuits, articulated with the stakes of the local engagement of the musical creation and the ecological impacts of our practices.
These are all particularly sensitive subjects since the upheaval of our first confinement, which has invited us to rethink our relationships between artists, audiences, organizers and political leaders. As we will see through the stories, examples and reflections brought by our guests, it is above all a question of dialoguing on the representations that we have of the systems of production of the musical creation, as well as the inheritances which shape us and which we transform, digest, reactivate, each one in our way…

Topics:

– Rethinking dissemination models and links between professionals
– To explore more and more varied relationships with the public, to make ourselves and them more active, to co-construct and/or act together
– Questioning our economic models and connecting with the citizen dimension (farmers’ relays, AMAP)
– Take charge, act in a field approach without waiting for it to come from above
– Draw inspiration from tried and tested approaches in other disciplines
– Do declarations, long-standing legacies, but also new specifications, and sometimes even selection criteria, change field practices?
– How do field practices interact with political intentions?
– The question of short circuits also implies thinking about the ecological impacts in artistic creation
– Developing a local action while keeping an international dimension: the current dilemma?
– How can you become part of the local fabric when you are presenting a creative project far from your home territory? The local relays, the preparation with the public on the spot, the impacts beyond the diffusion action.

Speakers:

What if, for the first time in Europe, a river had the opportunity to express itself and defend its interests through a system of interspecific representation?

Imagined as a constitutive process for the creation of a parliament of the river, this project aims at defining the forms and functioning of a parliament for a non-human entity (the Loire), where the fauna, the flora and the different material and immaterial components would be represented.

Led by the writer and jurist Camille de Toledo, the Commission for a Parliament of the Loire invites you to follow its investigative work through a series of hearings. These hearings put into action a collective research to imagine the potential institution of a river ecosystem and to involve in a reconfigured parliament the fauna, the flora, the sandbanks, the water masses and all the components of the Loire.

For the first telephone conversation of the Loire Parliament, Camille De Toledo brings together Antoine Conjard (Director of the Scène Nationale de l’Hexagone, Meylan), Marine Yzquierdo, Sylvia Lasfargeas, Samy Hamel, Nina Salaunlhelgoualch (lawyers, members of Notre Affaire à tous) and Jérémy Cheval (architect, teacher-researcher at the Ecole de l’Anthropocène in Lyon). Together, they discussed the possible replication of the Loire Parliament project outside the Loire region and the spread of the idea of nature as a legal subject. The census of jurisprudences, the implementation of a public service of the imagination and new tools of representation of the text of laws are as many tracks traced by our guests to think of a widened diffusion of the rights of nature.

Julie Cabot-Nadal (eco-psychologist), Emilie Barrier (psychologist, animal interpreter) and Serge Mang-Joubert (geomatics engineer, sylvotherapist) are invited by Pascal Ferren to share their experiences of interspecies communication. Listening, connection rituals, meditations, these practitioners share with the commission their tools to understand the languages of the living and the non-living.

Bruno Marmiroli, a member of the Loire Parliament Commission, has invited specialists in “making”; Isabelle Daëron (designer), André Guillerme (technical historian), James Bouquard (landscape gardener) and Patrick Genty (gardener/landscape gardener) to reflect on the question that is on the minds of all those who, in their practices, produce forms and objects in the Loire area: how can we put in place protocols, ways of doing things, and gestures without damaging the equilibrium of the Loire system? Vernacular know-how and procedures for diverting public orders are some of the answers developed by the guests during this conversation.

Joan Pronier (member of COAL) invited the visual artists Rocio Berenguer (choreographer of the post Anthropocene), Thierry Boutonnier (visual artist claiming cooperation and interdependence with ecosystems in his practice) and Benoit Mangin (co-founding artist of the duo Art orienté objet) to share their experiences of collaboration and representation of the living. How do these sensitive experiences allow us to attach ourselves, to understand other behaviors than those of human beings? In what way are artists allies in this broadening of perception? Virginie Serna, archaeologist, chief curator of heritage, project manager at the Ministry of Culture and member of the commission invites three professionals from the Loire to discuss their ways of working with water. This program will run for a minimum of three years, with an annual theme. Each year will be broken down into three chapters proposed as a series of reflections to be followed during the three festivals.

AMBIVALENCES #1 (2020/2021) : ENVIRONMENTAL MUTATIONS

CHAPTER 1 : Art, environment and digital

Festival Maintenant – Rennes – Thursday, October 8, 2020

This first chapter will attempt to present a state of the art, digital and environment relations and to question their inter-relations. How is art in general and digital art in particular evolving in the face of the environmental crisis? How do artists deal with this reality and position themselves in relation to these issues? Can they contribute to awareness and encourage public and citizen action by positioning themselves as observers and defenders of living things?

16h30-18h00 (90′) – Round table “Digital arts and environmental awareness

This round-table discussion focused on the ambivalent and contemporary relationship of the artist to the environment, both ecological and technological, and more specifically on the role of digital arts in the awareness of the environmental crisis.

The conference is available in replay

EXPLORE THE IMPACT OF TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT ON OUR SOCIETIES

In a society plagued by the resurgence and constancy of environmental, social, cultural, economic, political and sanitary crises, the digitization of our lives makes the reading and analysis of current mutations all the more complex. Starting from the premise that digital technology is not “neutral” and that it is appropriate to re-contextualize the work of artists and the place of art in relation to contemporary issues, the desire to explore the theme of ambivalence intersects with several reflections:

– Ambivalence of digital technology on the one hand, presented as a solution to various current problems or as intangible progress in itself (“technological solutionism”), without this necessarily being questioned, but leading to negative effects on various levels (environmental impact, privacy, disproportionate weight of certain actors, etc.) which must be questioned.

– Ambivalence of the digital art on the other hand and of its actors (of which we are), who contribute to make emerge critics while participating in a form of banalization, of acceptability and of diffusion of digital technologies.

The objective of these meetings is to open up times of shared reflection aimed at exploring the mutations (positive and negative) generated by the technical development of our societies on different levels (environment, society, politics…), as well as the internal lines of tension running through these techniques.

EXPLORE CURRENT CHANGES THROUGH THE PRISM OF ARTISTIC CREATION

The role of art, as a source of questioning, interrogation and criticism, seems to us essential to explore these questions and issues. The “artist’s” point of view, through his creation, his production process and the experience he proposes, allows us to cross all the themes addressed and constitutes the framework of a collective reflection. This “entry” allows us to talk about the environment, the living and the political while maintaining a precise and stable guideline.

The predictive thought of the artist, made as much of his intimate prospection as of the acuity of his senses allows moreover to explore probable, desirable, desirable, obsolete, constrained, defective futures, to write speculative scenarios and to extract us from the dichotomy utopia (the technique is going to save us) / dystopia (there is nothing more to do).

The health crisis linked to COVID-19 puts many questions into perspective and modestly implies reconsidering our models, our achievements and our practices. The time is marked by uncertainty, and while we cannot answer it, we can ask questions and suggest that informed and open thinking is a good start. The notion of mutation obviously echoes the viral nature of this crisis, which profoundly affects our individual and collective perception of what makes or should make “society”.

On September 10, 2020, Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, Minister of Culture, opened the second annual session of the Cycle des Hautes Etudes de la Culture, placed under the sign of Ecology and Culture.

Addressing cultural issues in their societal, territorial and economic contexts, the Cycle des Hautes Études de la Culture pursues a triple objective of decompartmentalization, sharing and renewal of approaches.

For nine months, the auditors, who come from various backgrounds, some from the Ministry of Culture, some from outside, build, through meetings and conferences as well as in working groups, a strategic vision, debated and shared on the major issues of cultural policies in the face of contemporary changes.

We are living in crucial times of transition. The climate issue has become an emergency and the adaptation of our way of life a necessity.
Culture plays an essential role in these upheavals: in addition to the regulatory changes that need to be made, a more profound evolution is required, involving a change in representations and a redefinition of the imaginary world, where humanity is no stranger to nature, but participates fully in its evolution and its balance.

COAL contributed to the first MODULE of this cycle on September 10-11, 2020. Cultural policies: what new dimensions in a context of transition?

In an environment where the actors are numerous, the policies are territorialized, and the financing constraints are important, what role is expected from the Ministry of Culture? What is the relationship with other decision-makers and actors? How can we anticipate current environmental and social changes and better address the public?

The afternoon was largely devoted to the issue of ecological transition, by putting different projects into perspective. A presentation of the sustainable development strategy of the Ministry of Culture by Olivier Lerude, Senior Official in charge of sustainable development, in dialogue with Lauranne Germond, co-founder of the COAL association, and a presentation by Xavier Delestre, archaeologist, of the Cosquer Cave, a unique witness to climate change, followed.

At the heart of the issues that link artistic creation and sustainable development, the Station Flottante proposes to examine, from July 15 to 19, the impact of cultural projects on their environment.

At the frontier of the artistic, technical and scientific worlds, the public is invited to attend round-table discussions, workshops for young audiences or to visit a video exhibition. Turned around the questions of ecology, energy autonomy and circular economy, these days are placed under the sign of the interactions between the disciplines, the practices and especially the coalition between artistic practices and environment.

COAL is invited to one of these Round Tables on July 15 from 7 to 8 pmFlavie L.T (artist), Sami Trabelsi (architect), Ouazzani Carrier (artists), Vincent Voillat (artist), Lauranne Germond (curator, COAL), Camille de Tolédo (writer – audio capsule from Berlin) to discuss the theme “Listening to life. Artistic creation & sustainable development”. The debate will be moderated by Anne-Cécile de Vellis and Arnaud Idelon.

In parallel, each of the speakers had the opportunity to submit a video that will allow the public to analyze these links between art and ecology. COAL is pleased to present a filmed work by Eléonore Saintagnan (special mention of the COAL 2020 Prize jury) & Grégoire Motte from 2015, Les Bêtes Sauvages. This set of videos will be presented during the 5 days on board the Floating Station.

At the end of these days and of these different activities, the Floating Station is transformed in the evening into a friendly place for concerts, projections, DJ sets and refreshments.
