Crossing arts and sciences to address environmental issues: solution or illusion?
On the occasion of the 25th edition of the Fête de la Science which will take place from October 8 to 16, 2016 in Montpellier during which is organized a Art & Science workshop on urban soils at the Jardin des Plantes by the Sols Fictions collective of the Laboratoire de la sustainable culture of COAL. The latter proposes a debate to the university community, the day before the event, in partnership with the University Paul-Valéry.
The impacts of human societies on the environment have never been so palpable, to the point of speaking of the Anthropocene. However, environmental protection issues still have a hard time percolating through a large part of the population and scientists’ warnings often go unheeded. The crossroads between arts and sciences proposes a sensitive and experiential approach to meet this challenge. Still marginal in France, this approach meets a growing enthusiasm from artists but also from scientists.
The objective of this debate is to bring together scientists from different disciplines (ecology, human and social sciences…) and artists in order to exchange on their respective practices but also on the interest and the possibilities of crossing arts and sciences.
After a short presentation of their last exhibition, the members of the group “Sols Fictions” (artists Anais Tondeur and Yesenia Thibault-Picazo; scientists Marine Legrand, Germain Meulemans and Alan Vergnes) and Maëva Blandin from COAL will lead the debate, followed by an aperitif.
