The COAL – Culture & Diversity Student Prize is associated, for the third consecutive year, with the French Nature Reserves through a residency program.

In 2022, the COAL – Culture & Diversity Student Prize is dedicated to the oceans. This geographical, dreamlike and political horizon, cultural heritage as much as natural and breeding ground for the imagination, is the basis of the global phenomena that make our planet habitable. It is also the cradle of economic and commercial life. The transformation of the oceans in the face of climate change is a real challenge, both in terms of taking action and in terms of raising awareness of sometimes elusive processes.

THE ARTISTS NOMINATED FOR THE 3RD EDITION OF THE COAL – CULTURE & DIVERSITY STUDENT AWARD AND THEIR PROJECTS ARE

  • Collective Influences, (Haute École des arts du Rhin), I dreamed of horizons
  • Ulysse Massey, (École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), Velella Velalla
  • Allan Mensah, (École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon), To its agile waters

PRESENTATION OF THE STUDENT PROJECTS NOMINATED FOR THE COAL – CULTURE & DIVERSITY 2022 STUDENT AWARD :

The visual and sound installation J’ai rêvé d’horizons (I dreamed of horizons ) by the collective Influences proposes a gradual and sensitive dive into the oceans. Eve Chevara, Lise Dolidze from the Haute école des arts du Rhin, Corentin Boubay from the University of Strasbourg and Erwin Saunier from the University of Toulouse invite, after a gleaning of testimonies, to a guided nocturnal walk in the heart of the natural reserve to understand and sublimate the people who dedicate part of their lives to the protection of the ocean.

Ulysse Massey, from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, poeticizes the fibrous residues from coastal activities through the arts of spinning and weaving. Velella velella, named after these aquatic surface organisms, become true tapestries that pay homage to the materiality of marine dust and air.

À ses eaux agiles, presented by Allan Mensah is a research project about insularity. The student of the École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon conceives a visual atlas linked to the imaginary of islands, borders, limits as well as in-situ architectural devices evoking island possibilities.

PARTNERS

The association Réserves Naturelles de France (RNF) leads a national network of more than 1,000 nature protection professionals working daily in the territories where there are nearly 356 Nature Reserves. Their actions are based on three missions: the knowledge of the natural biological and geological heritage, its management and protection, the sensitization and the discovery by the citizens of these spaces of nature, life, meetings and creation. As an ambassador for nature reserves, RNF is the voice of nature, actively mobilizing all of society’s stakeholders, particularly in the field of culture.

AWARD HOLDERS

The COAL – Culture & Diversity Student Prize is supported by the Culture & Diversity Foundation and the COAL association.

The Culture & Diversity Foundation, a Fimalac corporate foundation created by Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, aims to promote access to the arts and culture for young people from modest backgrounds. Since its launch in 2006, it has been designing and implementing sustainable programs directly in the field with its cultural, educational and social partners. More than 50,000 young people have already benefited from its actions.

The association COAL, created in France in 2008 by professionals of contemporary art, ecology and research, mobilizes artists and cultural actors on societal and environmental issues. Through the COAL Prize, international cooperation actions and more than fifty exhibitions and cultural projects, COAL is the first French actor to promote the emergence of a new culture of ecology.
