Created in 2020, the aim of the COAL Student Prize is to support French students in the field of arts and culture who are experimenting with and proposing concrete, creative solutions to the ecological transition, through a residency in partnership with France’s Nature Reserves. COAL and its partners wish to encourage young people to get involved and promote artists’ responses to current ecological issues.

Being Transformative! This is the theme of the 2024 edition. At a time when knowledge alone is no longer enough to motivate action, the COAL Student Prize 2024 calls for transformation from within, of the senses, of care, of the self with others. A call to see culture as the breeding ground for our relationship with nature and, by the same token, our greatest asset in bringing about radical, sustainable change.

The COAL Student Prize was created in 2020 by COAL in partnership with the Fondation Culture et Diversité and with the support of the French Ministry of Culture.

The Student COAL Prize awards the winner a two-month residency in one of France’s 350 nature reserves, with a €5,000 prize to cover the cost of residency (transport and accommodation). The winning candidate will be supported throughout their residency by the nature reserve’s educational and scientific teams as they implement their project.

The Réserves naturelles de France (RNF) association runs a national network of more than 700 nature protection professionals, working on a daily basis for the 350 nature reserves in mainland France and overseas. As an ambassador for nature reserves, RNF is the voice of nature, actively mobilizing all of society’s stakeholders, particularly in the field of culture.
