How can music and ocean meet? How does a composer get inspired by the sea and collaborate with a marine photographer? What is eco-acoustics and what do the sounds of the ocean tell us about the future of this ecosystem? How to create between melodies and cries of alarm of the living?

Thursday, April 28, 2022 was held the inaugural meeting “Les Mondes Sonores de l’Océan”, at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes. About fifty people came to attend the exchanges between our four speakers: the composer Dai Fujukira, the artist Nicolas Floc’h, the musicologist Emmanuel Reibel, and the bio-acoustician Maëlle Torterotot. All moderated by Calixte Bailliard, from La Lettre du Musicien.
The exchanges were introduced by Marc Feldman, General Administrator of the Orchestre National de Bretagne.
FOLLOWED BY THE EVENING OF CONCERTS “LOGBOOK: AT THE TRADE WINDS”.
This meeting was followed, at 8 pm, by the concert “Journal de bord : aux alizés” organized by the Orchestre National de Bretagne.
The Diary of the Brest sailor Jean Cras, evoking life on board a ship at sea, is associated with a rarely performed masterpiece and historical photographs from the Albert-Kahn Museum. The ONB opens this concert with a new score by Dai Fujikura, a Concerto for shakuhachi, an emblematic instrument of traditional Japanese music, presented with the source of its inspiration: the magical images of the dives of the Breton photographer, Nicolas Floc’h. Grant Llewellyn completed the program with works by Felix Mendelssohn and Welsh-born Grace Williams.
The National Orchestra of Brittany is constantly pushing the limits of its expression, creating bridges between music and various artistic and intellectual disciplines, such as dance, history, visual arts, science and the environment. In 2018, the National Orchestra of Brittany has decided to put this transversality at the service of promoting the sea and its preservation. This is how the concert “40èmes roissants”, a real maritime journey in sound and image, allowed to highlight women and men of the sea.
Strengthened by this success, the National Orchestra of Brittany is perpetuating its approach by including the Ponant Project in a multi-year program bringing together scientists and artists to raise public awareness of the environmental problems of our society.
Throughout the year 2022, COAL will accompany the National Orchestra of Brittany in the definition and implementation of its CSR strategy. In collaboration with Influence for good, COAL offers training for companies to include the principles of the ecological and solidarity transition in their practices.
