THE WALLS OF AUDUBON

Our springs are becoming quieter and quieter because the birds are no longer there to sing: the challenge of the Murs d’Audubon is to take into account the symbolic and real impact of this disappearance through art and shared creation. More information on the site murs-audubon.org

Initiated in Harlem, USA, under the name Audubon Mural Project, the Audubon Walls public art project consists of painting murals of birds threatened by climate change on city walls. He finds his inspiration in the most remarkable illustrations of birds, those made by the French-American naturalist Jean-Jacques Audubon in the 19th century.

A collaboration between the National Audubon Society and the Harlem-based Gitler Gallery &_____, the project quickly gained public and press attention and spread throughout New York City and many other American cities.

2020 UNDER THE SIGN OF THE LIVING

Continuing the movement that began in the United States, COAL is bringing the Audubon Mural Project to France: les Murs d’Audubon. The holding of the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille in June 2020, and the deployment of VIVANT, a Cultural Season for Biodiversity by COAL, during the summer and spring of 2020, are all reasons to call on street artists, cities, nature conservation sites, and everyone to create bird murals in the city. A creative and committed citizen mobilization to face the erosion of biodiversity caused by climate change.

FRESCOES EVERYWHERE IN FRANCE

The Audubon Walls were to be launched in Loire-Atlantique, where Jean-Jacques Audubon originated, in connection with the Loire-Atlantique department. COVID decided otherwise! The walls of Audubon are deployed from the summer of 2020 in a plurality of places: cities, institutions, parks and nature reserves, associations and cultural places including the City of Boulogne sur mer and its program of Street Art, the Country Portes de Gascogne, the Nature Reserves of France, the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Anglet, the walls of Marseille …

The launch of the Audubon Mural Project in France echoes the film Birds of America by Jacques Loeuille, a 2018 COAL Award-winning project about the disappearance of America’s birds that will be released in theaters in France in the fall of 2020 or early 2021.

A big thank you to everyone who supports Audubon Walls!
