The work Suite de Pan of Thierry Boutonnier will be inaugurated on October 20th in Fleurance. Suite de Pan is an original creation of the artist Thierry Boutonnier, accompanied by COAL, realized within the framework of a public order initiated by the Country Portes de Gascogne. It constitutes a new stage of the course “Art and Environment” which marks out this part of the territory of Gers.

This public commission, located in an ecological zone in the town of Fleurance, explores with sensitivity and aestheticism the responsibility of humans in the extinction crisis of biodiversity. She invites us to take a step back and see and to awaken to life, through art and science.

Suite de Pan is an observatory of endangered biodiversity nestled in an oak tree. There is a contemporary celestial globe engraved with new constellations drawn after the shape of extinct or endangered species. By projecting biodiversity in the sky, the work values the richness of life and reminds us of the interdependence between the infinitely large and the infinitely small.

This is why it is essentially a collective and collaborative project.

It was designed in collaboration with Philippe Heeb, a researcher at the “Evolution and Biological Diversity” laboratory, with the support of COAL, as well as with several local players on the site in question: the regional conservatory of natural areas, CPIE, Ferme aux étoiles, carpenters, associations, walkers, etc., who are accompanying its development and underpinning its concept.

The position in space but also the final shape of the work are the result of a co-construction with all the actors (sponsors, scientists, naturalists, astronomers and artist), after recommendations, studies and faunistic and floristic diagnoses of the territory, with the aim of respecting and continuing to study, in the future, the ecological status of the environment.

He lives and works in Lyon. He develops a work around the notion of domestication. Active and reactive artist, Thierry Boutonnier deploys a wide panel of individual behaviors in reaction to the so-called modern system. It considers the artistic act with the same requirements of information, know-how, identification of objectives, operational research, decision-making imperatives and concentration of means as any project management activity.

Claiming to be non-specialist, versatile and multidisciplinary, he uses all the means at his disposal: performances, videos, sculptures, images and photographs, diagrams, publications… He develops in particular a work around the artistic representation of entomophagy, starting from the observation that in France and in these so-called developed States, we practice an agro-industry catastrophic for employment, hygiene and the environment. He is experimenting with entomophagy by placing it at the heart of collective kitchens in places where knowledge is transmitted: colleges, high schools, universities…

The “Art and Environment” course of the Pays Portes de Gascogne

This work was selected following a call for applications for the “Art and Environment” course initiated in 2015 by the Pays Portes de Gascogne Development Council. The course was conceived by the PETR Pays Portes de Gascogne, under the impulse of the Council of Development of the Pays Portes de Gascogne which leads since 2009 of a reflection associating art and environment. This think tank accompanied the communities in the choice of the selected sites and in the artistic choice.

The principle of the project: to propose to artists to be inspired by a place to create a unique work, inspired by a landscape, the space in which it will take place and its history.

This project is supported by the Ministry of Culture, the DRAC Occitanie, Europe through the LEADER program of the Pays Portes de Gascogne, and the town hall of Fleurance.

Program of the day :

Ackroyd & Harvey imagined the Radical Action Reaction Project, a collaborative, monumental and long-term work, co-produced by COAL and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle for ArtCOP21

The Radical Action Reaction (RAR) project stems from Ackroyd & Harvey’s long-standing interest in plants and the resilience of nature. It is a continuation of the work “Beuys’ Acorns”, the acorns of Beuys’ oaks .

In 2007, the artists collected and planted acorns in the United Kingdom from the 7,000 oak trees planted by the German artist Joseph Beuys in 1982 at the documenta in Kassel. From some 200 young shoots, they created the work Beuys’ Acorns, presented several times in renowned institutions in France and the United Kingdom.

The RAR project, for Radical Action Reaction, is composed of three successive and interdependent phases: RADICAL, TREE ON TOUR an eight-week interactive tour of Beuys’ Acorns in cultural venues and public institutions in France; ACTION. THE TREE CEREMONY, a monumental installation and a ceremonial tree planting by the artists in Paris at the National Museum of Natural History and at the Arboretum of Chèvreloup (Yvelines), and a wave of tree plantings in about fifteen places in France during the COP21. This will be followed by a series of Reactions implemented in the long term by the twenty or so cultural and scientific partners involved in the project.

This comprehensive device aims to convey the potential of art as a form of environmental activism.

ACTION. THE TREE CEREMONY

December 3-7, 2015

At the National Museum of Natural History and at the Arboretum of Chèvreloup (Yvelines).

Installation and ceremonial planting co-produced by COAL and the National Museum of Natural History for ArtCOP21

On December 3, as the COP21 negotiations began, Ackroyd & Harvey inaugurated themonumental installation of a majestic oak tree surrounded by a drapery of living grass at the Jardin des Plantes. The tree, thus magnified and staged, pays homage to Beuys’ statement that “the world must be made into a great forest, cities and environments must be built like forests”. The work is an aesthetic call to cover our cities with trees and plants, to prepare us for an uncertain future .

Science shows how crucial forests are to the long-term health of cities: a 10% increase in tree cover can keep temperature increases below 4°C and make cities invulnerable to climate change until 2080.

This oak tree with a strong symbolic value was chosen for its ability to adapt to the changing Parisian climate and for its slow growth that captures CO2 in a sustainable way. Carrying the hope and memory of the coP21, a decisive meeting to negotiate a binding international agreement on climate, This tree was planted at the end of the climate conference, in the Arboretum of the National Museum of Natural History, joining the illustrious trees that punctuate our history of natural sciences.

This planting catalyzes a series of citizen plantings and reactions in a network of committed cultural structures in raising awareness of climate issues, including the CAPC Museum of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux, the Zoo-Jardin Botanique in Mulhouse, La Station, Nice, Les Moulins/Studio Orta, Boissy Le-Chatel, the Domaine de Chamarande, the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, the Cimetière des Gonards, the City of Versailles, and the INRA Centre de Versailles-Grignon

From November 25, 2015 to January 3, 2016, for ArtCOP21, La Villette and COAL invited Michael Pinsky to invest the Ourcq Canal with the work “L’eau qui dort” (Sleeping Water), composed of about forty floating pieces, on either side of the 2 banks.

F.Pouliquen

The canals of Paris, historical and sustainable communication routes by essence, are a key place of exchange and resource in our history. But this ecosystem, which is very sensitive to the climate, is also often the receptacle for the rubbish thrown away by local residents. Invisible discharge that hides our overflow of objects under its still waters.

With the help of a team of divers and the services of the Paris canals, the artist Michael Pinsky went to find in the depths of the waters and oblivion, the domestic wrecks, which the community got rid of, to expose them on the surface.

Dominique Germond

Confronting society with its production of waste, artist Michael Pinsky brings back to life and brings to light on the surface of the canal: bicycles, cans, shopping carts, signs, both strange and familiar. The installation is accompanied by a soundtrack made from these metal objects emerging from the water. The public is invited to download it on their phone and listen to it near the work. The sound of the objects, used as real instruments, provokes a wave of vibrations that resonates in the spectators’ bodies. This musical score was created in a workshop with groups of teenagers living near the park as part of the mediation process initiated by La Villette.

The work has a positive effect on the environment by cleaning the canal in full view of passers-by. With this poetic and educational work, Michael Pinsky invites us to question the consequences of a “banal” gesture, that of throwing away, reproduced on a societal scale.

The COPBox is a participative module designed by COAL and Lemoal&Lemoal Architects for the COP21.

Placed in the public space, the COPBox allows any citizen to record a personalized video message to the negotiators of the 195 countries participating in the COP21. Oriented on the sensitization to the climatic stakes, it will be the symbol of the citizen mobilization throughout ArtCOP21 until December.

The climate is everyone’s business and without the involvement of citizens, the international negotiations that will take place at the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) will not be successful. In order to give an account of the citizens’ determination and to bring their voice to the decision-makers, the association COAL Art et Écologie and the agency LEMOAL&LEMOAL Architects, have imagined the COPBox, a participative module designed to collect the citizens’ word and to raise awareness of the climate issues.

This micro-architecture placed in the public space is equipped with a digital application that allows any citizen to share their ideas for the climate by recording a personalized video message intended for the negotiators of the 195 countries gathered at the COP21.

Both unique and linked by the identity of the COPBox, these messages are the symbol of the collective and international mobilization for the climate. They are freely distributed on social networks, on the ArtCOP21 website, the Cultural Agenda of COP21; transmitted to the General Secretariat of COP21 and a selection of the best messages will be projected at Le Bourget on the official website of COP21.

Forms and uses

The COPBox is a micro architecture made of standard three ply wood panels allowing an economy of material and time of realization. Its exterior signage, designed by the agency Camping design, invites passers-by to enter. Inside, a tablet integrated into the construction serves as both a digital interface and a camera.

After a short registration process, each participant has 60 seconds to present their ideas. At the end of the recording, he can review his video, validate it or start over. By validating it, he receives it on his mailbox and can then broadcast it on social networks – #COPBOX #COP21.

The COPBox application, developed by Onatys, will soon be available on the Apple Store, allowing people to leave messages anywhere in the world. All the videos are moderated and broadcast on the ArtCOP21 website, the Cultural Agenda of COP21.

The COPBox was launched on the Berges de Seine on July 11 during the ArtCOP21 festival and will remain there until August 27. It will then be moved to a dozen cultural and institutional locations in Paris and the surrounding area, until it reaches the civil society village at Le Bourget, during the COP21.

Urban DataScape is an interactive multimedia installation to immerse Parisians in the heart of climate issues. Designed for the Berges de Seine, this work inaugurates the launch of ArtCOP21, a year-long cultural event on climate change leading up to COP21, and presented at the Grand Palais from December 4 to 10, 2015.

Invited by COAL to invest the Berges de Seine, the artist Olga Kisseleva has imagined Urban DataScape to connect walkers to their urban environment and reveal the collective and systemic dimension of climate-related issues. The work was developed specifically for ArtCOP21 in collaboration with the architect Etienne Delprat, the Art&Science laboratory of the Sorbonne, the Agence Parisienne du Climat and Météo France, Eau de Paris, ERDF and APUR.

Urban DataScape consists of a playful installation in the form of a monumental QRCode, which once flashed offers walkers the possibilitý to travel through an enriched digital landscape connected to historical, economic, political, cultural, and social data related to climate in the world and in their immediate environment. The walker is also invited to participate in an interactive game that confronts him with his own interactions with the climate.

A critical look at the use of technology, Urban DataScape also proposes a non-market re-appropriation of the QR-Code to encourage citizen mobilization and participation in the great climate challenge through the potential of digital technology.

The first meeting of ArtCOP21, the Paris Climate 2015 Cultural Agenda

The inauguration of Urban DataScape is the first event of ArtCOP21, a cultural event organized by COAL and CAPE FAREWELL – the first two European actors to mobilize artists and cultural actors on climate issues – for the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held in Paris from November 30th to December 11th 2015.

ArtCOP21 is labeled COP21 – Paris Climat 2015 by the General Secretariat of the COP21 and the City of Paris. ArtCOP21 is supported by the European Union, the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, the Ministry of Culture and Communication, ADEME and the Île de France Region.

Olga Kisseleva

Olga Kisseleva is an artist and founder of the Art&Science laboratory, playing a pioneering role in the field of contemporary research and reflection on emerging forms of creation. Olga Kisseleva’s work intertwines actions that take place in urban environments or in networks with interventions in galleries and museums. www.kisseleva.org

Etienne Delprat

Étienne Delprat is an architect and artist, doctoral student in the Art & Sciences laboratory, Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne. He collaborates with various institutions and creators on projects at the intersection of the city, landscape, art and sustainable development.

Art and Science Laboratory, ACTE Institute, UMR 8218, CNRS, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne

Located on a research axis associating art with exact sciences, natural sciences, and political sciences, the research line of the laboratory proposes to develop, analyze and promote collaborative projects elaborated jointly by scientists. The research line will federate collaborative initiatives between artist-researchers and scientists who will conceive works together while simultaneously analyzing their emergence. The crossing of disciplines will take place at the level of concepts, models, methods and materials. This interdisciplinary approach will make it possible to reconstruct a reality artificially fragmented by the compartmentalization of knowledge and aims at the acquisition of transversal competencies. It aims as much to engage issues in direct relation to the art world as to open it to a wider field, that of science.

Paris Climate Agency

The APC is the operational agency for the fight against climate change and for the energy transi- tion of Paris 2020. With 90 members, the Agence Parisienne du Climat has been helping to achieve the objectives of the Paris Climate and Energy Plan since 2011.

Its strong points:
– Free and independent advice for Parisians on energy and climate issues
– An energy-climate action-tank for the actors of the Greater Paris metropolis
– Supporting change and transformation of the territory, in particular the significant contribution to the rehabilitation of the Parisian building stock
– Listening to the weak signals of societal transformations (new economic models, social and technical innovations…)
– Involvement in national and international networks to benefit from their experiences and to promote the actions of Paris, a world city

In 2015, the APC is continuing its work of information, mobilization and support on the Parisian territory, and this, in the dynamics of the International Conference Paris Climate 2015 (COP21), which will take place from November 30 to December 11, 2015 at Le Bourget.
– Advancing common understanding of energy/climate issues
– Acting to support the implementation of the Paris Climate and Energy Plan
– Mobilizing the territory

Saturday, October 4, 2014 – Meet at Parc Montsouris from 7pm to 2am!

The Domaine départemental de Chamarande, in its capacity as a center for
an artistic and cultural organization known for its participative proposals and its commitment to the issues of “sustainable culture”, presents an artistic installation in the Montsouris park at the invitation of the artistic direction of Nuit Blanche.

With the collaboration of COAL.

Radiant Tree is a new creation – thought and produced especially for the Nuit Blanche 2014 – proposed by the collective Hehe: an ordinary tree implanted in a public garden is transformed into a bright luminous entity. Illuminated by ultraviolet light, the foliage of the tree impregnated with a fluid glows in the night.

The green fluorescent tree evokes the contamination of nature by urban pollutants, radioactivity or utopian technologies of the future such as bioluminescent trees known as “glow in the dark” whose luminescence is made possible by genetic modification. This electric green color is the color used for advanced experiments in new technologies, ecology and toxicity.

The metamorphosis of the tree creates an imaginary space, open to contemplation, which evokes the relationship of man with nature. The work strangely activates the park, itself an artificial space and imitation of nature, designed so that city dwellers can experience a form of nature imitated and designed for their leisure.

Saturday, October 4th, 2014
RDV Parc Montsouris (XIVth district)
Come and discover this view from 7pm to 2am!
A green lung in the heart of the city, the parks and gardens of Paris often offer a peaceful landscape of the meeting between man and nature with, as great witnesses, the trees. And if at night, by some benevolent alchemists, they illuminated our imagination…

From September 14 to October 10, 2010, as part of the Naturel brut art trail, come and discover The Honey Bank, the Stock Market or Life, an interactive work by the inimitable Olivier Darné.

Curator: Lauranne Germond – COAL

At a time when banks are sparing no one, in the midst of two crises, one ecological, the other financial, The Honey Bank invests in the Place de la Bourse. Swarm of bees and bank counter staged, it can be visited but not only…

Olivier Darné, a plastic artist and beekeeper, as he likes to define himself, invites us to meditate on our ability to take advantage of an ecosystem, whose balance we endanger by our excesses and our constant search for material profits. Faced with the decline of bee populations, this artistic device develops a real financial tool to subsidize a public service of pollination!

What if you invested in the honey bank to save the living and collect bee money?
In order to protect the species, the artist suggests you open a “bee bank account” which symbolically transforms money into honey. A part of the booty collected in the apiaries financed by your contribution will be shared among the members of the Honey Bank while another part will be transferred to the “International Honey Fund” (IMF) in order to constitute, year after year, an international honey library. Finally, the remaining part will be sold and the revenues reinvested in the creation of new pollination apiaries in France and abroad.

The banking visits take place on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 7pm. until October 2nd.
