COAL has developed a participative training methodology to initiate a process of ecological transition and solidarity at the scale of a cultural institution as well as with companies and brands via a cultural approach. A training project co-signed in partnership with Nicomak, specialist in professional training in sustainable development, and the agency influence for good. Because the ecological and solidarity transition is no longer limited to applying eco-gestures on a daily basis or to adapting to a regulation, or even to a product innovation. It is now a culture in its own right, with shared representations, values and criteria for choice that define usage and behavior.

Cultural structures but also brands and companies can play a fundamental role in the implementation of a new culture of ecological transition and participate in the evolution of common representations by acting on their functioning, their production, their image, their services and their products. Many artists and artistic practices are able to accompany this commitment.

These trainings are based on COAL’s 13 years of expertise in the field of sustainable culture. COAL is the first French actor in the field of art and ecology. It has initiated about fifty exhibitions and cultural events around the ecological transition all over France, awards the COAL Art and Environment Prize every year, and participates in the knowledge and dissemination of the theme through European cooperation, consulting, the organization of numerous workshops and conferences, and the creation of large-scale events.

Through their participative dimension, these training sessions allow solutions to emerge more efficiently and to involve teams in the process from the outset, which ensures better ownership of the project: collective voting and prioritization of proposals, analysis of impact factors, examples of good practice, existing tools and methods. We adopt a posture of facilitator of exchanges and resources. We want the group to experiment with collective intelligence in order to learn how to apply the principles of the ecological and solidarity transition in a group and in autonomy.

At the end of 2019, the City of Paris initiated a process to mobilize cultural actors as part of its circular economy plan, in order to support, based on their specificities, needs and the experiences of peers, the cultural establishments and venues of the City of Paris towards circular economy models in their sector of activity. The result was a first booklet of 9 toolboxes published on Paris.fr.

In 2021, the City of Paris, in partnership with COAL and Les Augures, will continue this collaborative work by exploring new thematic fields through two cycles of workshops on digital sobriety and materials, which will complement the tools already available.

THE DIGITAL

A working group led by the Augures will meet from March to June 2021 on the digital issue in the cultural sector, in an approach of efficiency, sobriety in energy and material consumption.

The objective of these working groups is to identify the constants and needs and to increase the competence of the cultural sector. This reflection will result in a new resource document on the subject.

THE MATERIALS

The second working group deals with the materials in a sectorial approach and the identification of the problems of each profession concerned (scenographer, stage manager, curator, technician, director, etc.).

The objectives of this working group are to identify the constants and needs and to increase the competence of the cultural sector on the issue of materials and the circular economy.

The work done in these two working groups will result in a transmission and sharing event in September.

On September 22, 2020, COAL and Influence for good joined forces to offer a one-day training session for the Trempolino association’s teams to learn the fundamentals of the ecological transition specific to the cultural sector: issues, tools, methods, strategies and actions.

Created in 1990, Trempolino is an associative structure, located in Nantes, dedicated to supporting the contemporary music sector. It is a project where all musical communities cross and work together: from babies to adults, from amateurs to professionals, from subcultures to chart-pop, from Ile-de-Nantes to international. His working method? Start from the field (the studio, the stage, etc.) and the needs of the musicians to propose original solutions. Trempolino thus contributes to the improvement of the offer proposed to the musicians, to the territories and their inhabitants, and more widely to the “current music” sector. Trempolino also plays an essential role in the implementation of innovative public policies by building partnerships with local actors, creating a dialogue with public authorities and contributing to the emergence of a European musical community.

As part of their 2021-2024 Site project, Trempolino contacted COAL and Influence for good to initiate their ecological transition

COAL and Influence for good have developed a participative training methodology to initiate an ecological and solidarity-based transition process at the scale of a cultural institution. The participative dimension allows solutions to emerge more efficiently and to involve teams in the process from the start, which ensures better ownership of the project.
This same method was proposed to the teams of the Trempolino association during a training day on September 22 on the theme “Integrating sustainable development into the Site project”.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

Exploring the role of music and creativity in addressing climate change and environmental challenges

Understand and use the main concepts of transition and its scope of application from internal operations and production to the impacts induced after the public

Bringing together a range of case studies, research, approaches and practical solutions for environmental sustainability in the cultural and music sector

Enable each participant to develop their leadership and ideas

To develop a collective ecological and solidarity-based transition process at the Trempolino level

To bring out the initiatives, the training day was divided into 3 modules. At the beginning of each thematic module, the training team begins by situating the theme of the module, before explaining the issues at stake each time by referring to examples in the music, performing arts, or creative industries. Following this presentation, the participants of the day are invited to debate and to come up with ideas connecting the theme of the module with their daily life at Trempolino. A vote is then held to determine the most interesting ideas to implement.

The division of the three modules :

Module 1: Integrating transition into the functioning of the Trempolino structure: 10am-1pm

Module 2: Indirect and Induced Impacts of Music Production – 2pm – 4pm

Module 3: Prospective module: Tremplino and the future of music

On the occasion of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020, COAL and its partners will bring together numerous actors from nature and culture to define the challenges, perspectives and modalities of a better collaboration between the cultural and the protection and enhancement of life (by invitation). These meetings take place at the MuCEM to share best practices and promote the integration of culture in the policies of defense and protection of nature, to federate resources, share and enhance the knowledge, examples and perspectives that feed public policies. The objective is to define cultural ecosystem services, Culture based solutions echoing the Nature based solutions, which contribute to initiate a new culture of nature. It is also a question of specifying the modalities of intervention of the artists on these subjects and to encourage the taking into account of these artistic practices in the policies of sensitization and conservation of nature. These meetings could lead to the creation of awareness and training modules on cultural issues for local actors, to be included in the annual congresses of the various federations. Based on an exchange of know-how, the Professional Workshops aim to strengthen intersectoral and multi-stakeholder dialogues. They also aim to underline the need for targeted support and funding mechanisms from the public sector to ensure the leadership of the cultural sector in preserving, restoring, enhancing, valuing and ensuring the sustainable and equitable use of biodiversity (see the National Strategy for Biodiversity). Supported by COAL, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, these Workshops are carried out in partnership with many partners, including the French Committee of the IUCN, the French Office of Biodiversity, the Nature Reserves of France, the magazine Billebaude, the Bureau des Guides, and the Institut Pytheas. They are supported by the European Union via the ACT network, as well as by the Ministries of Culture and Ecological Transition.

Objectives of the Workshops

– Encourage the actors of nature to seize the culture to raise awareness on the issues of biodiversity.

– To facilitate a direct dialogue between territorial actors, public policy makers and the cultural/artistic sector in order to exchange on cultural and artistic policies, devices and practices integrating the protection and valorization of the living.

– To highlight partnerships involving actors of different natures (institutions, civil society organizations, governmental structures), coming from various fields of activity (art, research, science) and working in various contexts (local, regional, national, international).

– Recognize and support the role of actors in the artistic and cultural sector working on biodiversity issues in order to support these initiatives through adequate support and funding mechanisms.

Workshop production

– A final document in the form of a letter of commitment from the participants of the Professional Workshops and stakeholder organizations in the framework of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 presenting the recommendations to decision makers.

– The drafting of proposals for the National Strategy for Biodiversity including a recommendation for organization and common action plans for the actors of culture and biodiversity protection.

– An online guide of references and resources after the Workshops, including the exchanges of the two days of meetings.

As a continuation of the ArtCOP21 professional workshops(www.artcop21.com), On the Move of the European Creative Climate Leadership network, of which COAL is a member, is organizing the Policy Lab 2018 on July 3 and 4 in Leeuwarden-Friesland, European Capital of Culture. On this occasion, Loic Fel, president of COAL, intervenes.

This Policy Lab entitled “Cities, Culture and Climate Change: Practices, Models and Future Actions” includes a variety of inspiring talks by cultural leaders, as well as a hands-on workshop designed for city representatives, influencers and policy makers. It is an opportunity for participants to discover many international examples of best practices, which showcase the low-carbon cultural economy as a driver of civic engagement, cultural diplomacy and innovation in urban development. Participants can also share their own experiences, ideas and challenges and have the opportunity to conduct an initial analysis of their cities and practices, to build successful initiatives and develop new approaches and partnerships.

The Policy Lab’s objectives are to:
– Demonstrate the contribution of artists and cultural professionals to the ecological agenda of cities;
– Identify opportunities to connect cultural and environmental policy makers: supporting innovation and unlocking economic, social and environmental values;
– Share good practices around how cities and their nearby rural suburbs can better support their cultural infrastructure, arts actions and cultural projects to respond to climate and environmental change through specific arts funding, but also policy, training and investment ;
– Begin to define key opportunities for integrating art, culture and the environment in cities: identify opportunities to create, converge and reinforce new and existing policies and practices.

Speakers and contributors: ECOC representatives (Leeuwarden-Friesland 2018 and Eleusis 2021), COAL, DutchCulture/TransArtists, Welcome to the Village, Oerol Festival, Recycle Art Festival, Julie’s Bicycle

This event is co-organized by On the Move and Julie’s Bicycle, with the support of the European Cultural Foundation and UCLG-Culture Committee, in the framework of the European Creative Climate Leadership network.

The European Creative Climate Leadership network supports cultural professionals in applying the qualities of the cultural sector to sustainable development. The network program is designed to help artists and cultural professionals reach their potential and maximize their creative and cultural actions in relation to climate change, with the help and support of the network structures to test and evolve their ideas and through sharing practices.

From October 8-14, 2017 in Ankaran, Slovenia, the Creative Climate Leadership network of which COAL is a member held its second leadership training session on cultural and environmental projects. 23 participants from Europe, Indonesia, Australia and South America, selected from an international call for applications, met for a week of exchange and learning.

The five-day intensive training allowed artists and cultural professionals to explore the cultural dimensions of climate change and to acquire many tools to be able to lead actions with impact, creativity and resilience.

Alternating between physical exercises, theoretical lectures, practical work in groups and debates, the training was structured around the following points
– The role of culture and creativity in the fight against climate change and environmental challenges;
– Environmental leadership and the opportunity for everyone to carry out cultural actions with a positive environmental impact;
– Accompanying each person in the development of their ideas and the implementation of their cultural and environmental project;
– The transmission of experiences, knowledge and skills between participants and within the circle of each one.

The collective and personal reflections were punctuated by interventions of cultural professionals working on environmental issues:
– Ivan Petrovic, President of the Management Team at the EXIT Foundation
– Alison Tickell, Director of Julie’s Bicycle
– Jurij Krpan, Artistic Director of the Kapelica Gallery

Beyond a training on the environmental issues of culture and environmental leadership, the training is above all a human experience of exchange of experiences, knowledge sharing, creativity, open-mindedness and solidarity.

Creative Climate Leadership brings together eight European partners representing a wide geographical area, a variety of artistic specialties and different approaches to encourage environmental action in the European creative sector: Julie’s Bicycle, Ars Baltica, COAL, EXIT Foundation, KRUG, mitos21, On The Move and PiNA.

Training for the cultural sector to acquire the fundamentals of the ecological transition: issues, tools, methods, strategies and actions.

COAL has developed a participative training methodology to initiate a process of ecological transition and solidarity on the scale of a cultural institution. The participative dimension allows solutions to emerge more effectively and involves teams in the process from the outset, which ensures better ownership of the project. The initial “New Start” training course can be completed with “environmental and social assessment” and “support for the implementation of a transition strategy” training modules.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

1. Exploring the role of culture and creativity in addressing climate change and environmental challenges

2. Understand and use the main concepts of transition and its scope of application, from internal operations and production to the impacts on the public

3. Bring together a range of case studies, research, approaches and practical solutions for environmental sustainability in the cultural sector

4. Enable each participant to develop their leadership and ideas

5. To develop a collective ecological and solidarity-based transition approach at the organizational level.

THE CONTENTS

Our proposals for supporting cultural institutions in their ecological and solidarity-based transition are based on four years of work within the European Creative Climate Leadership program, in which COAL is associated with eight cultural structures from eight countries. This program has allowed the development of a training methodology adapted to the different fields of culture, and the creation of an important database integrating numerous good practices.

THE METHOD

Our method follows the principles of innovation strategy through Design Thinking taught at EmLyon by Loïc Fel, which allows us to structure a constructive participative approach ensuring the best adaptation of proposals for each group of participants and their organization.

The “New Beginnings” training is organized into three modules, three levels of action:

Module 1: Integrating transition into the functioning of cultural structures
Analysis of impact factors, examples of good practices, existing tools and methods.

Module 2: Integrating sustainable development into cultural productions
Presentation of eco-responsible and solidarity-based initiatives in the cultural sector

Module 3: Adapting to change and anticipating the future
Prospective on cultural innovations and the evolution of the macro-economic, social and ecological context and its consequences for culture.

WHO IS OUR TRAINING FOR?

To cultural professionals in all fields of creation:

– Cultural places, museums, auditoriums, places of teaching, production and diffusion of culture.
– Theater, orchestra, dance or interdisciplinary collective companies.
– Networks, associations, funding bodies and decision makers in relation to the cultural sector

For the COP21, COAL, On the Move, Julie’s Bicycle and IFACCA are bringing together nearly 150 international actors from more than 25 countries to define the conditions for a better integration of sustainable development in the cultural sector.

This workshop is based on a series of previous studies and international recommendations. Based on an exchange of good practices, the Professional Workshop aims to strengthen inter-sectoral and multi-stakeholder dialogues.

It also aims to highlight the need for targeted public sector support and funding mechanisms to ensure the cultural sector’s leadership in sustainable development.

Objectives

– Facilitate a direct dialogue between public policy makers and private partners (arts councils, ministries, local authorities, foundations etc.) and the cultural/artistic sector in order to exchange on cultural and artistic policies, devices and practices integrating sustainable development and environmental sustainability in France, in Europe and internationally;

– To highlight partnerships involving actors of different nature (institutions, civil society organizations, governmental structures, etc.), coming from various fields of activity (art, research, science) and workingin various contexts (local, regional, national, international, etc.)

– Recognize and support the role of actors in the artistic and cultural sector working on these issues of environmental sustainability and, more broadly, of sustainable development, in order to support these initiatives through appropriate support and funding mechanisms;

– Disseminate a final document of common commitments from the Professional Workshop participants and stakeholder organizations at the ArtCOP21 Creative Parties Conference;

– Produce an online reference and resource guide after the Workshop that captures the discussions from the two-day meeting.

Biodiversity and climate change in interaction:
Create and live other possibilities.
The 3rd Assises du Vivant
February 9-10, 2015
UNESCO

UNESCO invites COAL to bring the voice of artists at the 3rd Assises du Vivant, February 9 and 10, 2015. Thierry Boutonnier, Benoit Mangin from Art Orienté Objet, and Naziha Mestaoui will present their artistic works on biodiversity and climate duringa co-creation workshop animated by COAL, on Tuesday February 10th from 9 to 11 am. COAL also invites botanical artist Liliana Motta to speak at the Environmental Humanities workshop on Monday, February 9 at 2pm. These meetings kick off ArtCOP21, the Paris Climate 2015 Cultural Agenda orchestrated by COAL and Cape Farewell.

The Living World Conference 2015

The 2015 Conference on Living Things is one of the first meetings in preparation for the Conference of the Parties in Paris (COP 21). These meetings aim to open the debate and stimulate exchanges with all stakeholders in the climate and biodiversity issues a few months before a crucial global meeting. In addition to the plenary sessions, which will provide a wealth of information, workshops will be held on each theme, to further scientific expression and synthesis for action, but also to allow the meeting and expression of innovative actors, pioneers of scientific, regulatory and entrepreneurial issues on climate change and its environmental and social impacts.

The place will be given to intergenerational dialogue and co-creation in the service of action.

The 2015 Assises du Vivant are intended to be a continuation of the dialogues initiated previously, during the Assises du Vivant organized in 2012 and 2013[1] : a frank and open debate between actors and stakeholders from different and varied backgroundsunited by the desire to exchange and the will to overcome the obstacles and impossibilities – real or perceived – around climate change and its interactions with biodiversity.

A meeting of dialogues and exchanges to prepare a fundamental event

The 2015 Assises du Vivant will bring together scientists, civil society actors, responsible and committed citizens, youth, entrepreneurs, artists … who will discuss the links between biodiversity and climate change, on the eve of the meeting of the Conference of the Parties on climate change that will take place in Paris in December 2015.

A new and hopeful look at climate change

Faced with the alarming signals, relayed by the scientific community, sometimes spread in a catastrophic manner by some, is it possible to keep hope and mobilize to co-construct, co-dream other possibilities? Would we be condemned to impotence in the face of predicted catastrophes? Refusing this impasse, we wish to show that the harshness of the facts, established with all the necessary scientific rigor, does not prevent us, on the contrary, from mobilizing our energies, our creativity and our will to take our common destiny in hand. Because if the mourning of our illusions is a necessary step before going further, if it is essential to accept the facts and their implications, it is still possible to overcome the feeling of powerlessness, to go beyond the impossibilities, to dream and create possible and desirable futures.

Valuation of innovative initiatives and solutions for the future

All over the world, initiatives are emerging that demonstrate that it is already possible to live while respecting the rate of renewal of ecosystems, that the use of biodiversity is not incompatible with its conservation. Far from being isolated and anecdotal examples, these actions and initiatives of social transformation mobilize millions of people and affect all sectors of the global economy. How can we draw inspiration from these actions and networks of actors, how can we better mobilize them and share their solutions with decision makers and skeptics? The Assises du Vivant is intended to be a space dedicated to the continuation of this dialogue, beyond the days of meetings in Paris, by building a community of practice that would share positive actions and visions to build other possible worlds.

Three strong themes for two days of meetings rich in sharing

We propose to study the interactions between biodiversity and climate change around three strong themes:

Rethinking Conservation: Towards “No Regrets” Strategies

Developing ecological solidarity and environmental justice: teaming up with the living

Doing business differently: articulating performance and resilience

For each theme, we will have a cross-reference between the available information and the scientists’ findings, the actions and solutions implemented at the local and international levels followed by an interactive discussion on the present and possible future.

Practical information

Reception of the public

125, Avenue de Suffren, 75007, Paris.

Live translation and monitoring

The sessions taking place in plenary (Room XI) are translated simultaneously into French and English.

These sessions will also be broadcast live on the internet in streaming mode.

Methods of exchange and animation

This meeting will take place in several “movements”:

– Participatory plenary sessions to share the state of the art on the links between biodiversity and climate;

– Workshops of commitment and scientific contribution to advance thinking and action on biodiversity and climate interactions;

– Moments of meetings between the participants of the civil society and forums of sharing of citizen initiatives around the three key themes.

UNESCO will welcome participants from various backgrounds and cultures: young people, scientists, bloggers, artists, citizens, entrepreneurs, all of whom are involved in a concrete way in the interactions between climate and biodiversity and each of whom is proposing solutions for these issues.
